A Safe Swing is one of those things that WILL work, but will almost certainly limit a player's ceiling, as it has in the case of David Dahl. In the clip below, notice how, among other things, David Dahl's hands go DIRECTLY to the ball. ![]() David DahlDahl has no Hitch in his swing, which is one of the chief telltales of a Safe Swing. The Safe SwingThe problem with a Safe Swing is it will limit a hitter's ability to hit for BOTH power and average. As a result, to reach their potential, most hitters will have to move away from a Safe Swing if they want to keep progressing in the game. Joe MauerJoe Mauer was a very good hitter. One of my favorites. In spite of his extremely simple, in my opinion overly safe, swing. ![]() Joe MauerWhich, I'd argue, was the product of the Mauer Quick Swing product. There's nothing wrong with — when a hitter is just learning how to hit — stripping a swing down. To its essence. I do that very thing when it comes to young hitters with theSimplest Swing. However, if you want to advance as a hitter, it's unlikely that you have the skills necessary to make the Simplest Swing work at the highest levels of the game. Because you're probably not as talented as Joe Mauer. Instead, Albert Pujols...
...and all the other things that make a swing Efficient. And not at all Safe. No guts, no glory. It's as simple as that. Snow PlowOne way to think about the Safe Swing is that it's like the Snow Plow in snow skiing. There's a reason why beginning skiiers are taught the Snow Plow. While it's entirely possible to Snow Plow your entire life and, on the up side, you'll basically never fall — and, at the end of the day, when I'm tired, yes I will sometimes revert to the Snow Plow — you're never going to be able to dominate a run full of moguls. Or impress anyone while running the chair lift line. To do that, you HAVE to learn to Parallel. And, when you Parallel, you're going to fall. Which is the price of moving better. And being able to quickly run through a field of moguls. |
