Disconnection

6/24/2008

This is a clip of one of the hitters on my older son's team. He's got a decent swing, especially in terms of his lower body action and his lack of bat drag, but he has a problem maintaining connection through the Point Of Contact. To a large degree this is because when he goes to baseball camps his instructors tell him to throw his hands at the ball and to take the knob of the bat to the ball. All this does is slow down his swing and rob him of most of his power.

The key frames in the clip above are frames 45 through 52. In frames 45 to 47, his swing is good. However, in Frame 48 he starts to extend and take his hands to the ball, which kills his bat speed.

The thing to notice is how in Frame 48 his hands, rather than rotating with his back shoulder, instead fly away from his body and toward the ball.
