Dr. Mike
Marshall 101
7/17/2007
In the interest of being fully
informed, I have read everything I can by the major pitching gurus
(Tom House, Dick Mills, Paul Nyman, Bill Thurston, Bob Cluck, John
Bagnozzi and others) as well as a number of current and former major league pitchers
(Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, and Randy Johnson).
While I have found that each has a few interesting points to make (especially Bob Shaw, Joe "Spanky" McFarland,
and Steven Ellis), I have found that the
person who best addresses the issues that I care about — safe
but effective performance — is Dr. Mike Marshall.
Dr. Mike Marshall is a former
major-league pitcher (14 seasons) and Cy Young winner who also has a PhD in
Kinesiology. He has spent the past 30 years figuring out why and how
pitchers get injured and coming up with ideas that will reduce the
likelihood that pitchers will be injured.
Update 10/20/2008:
Unfortunately, I have become increasingly uncomfortable
with many of Dr. Mike Marshall's latest ideas. I have come to believe that,
in an effort to
differentiate his work and demonstrate how much he has broken
with the establishment, Dr. Mike Marshall has basically gone off
the rails. I explain these concerns in my
piece
Dr. Mike Marshall: My Current View.
Below are links to the other pieces I have written about Dr.
Mike Marshall
