The Epidemic

The past few years have seen what is coming to be regarded as an epidemic of injuries to pitchers.

Elbows, in particular, seem to be failing at un-precedented rates.

I have been studying this problem for approaching 10 years, reading literally every journal article and textbook I can get my hands on, talking to doctors, and shooting and studying thousands of clips of pitchers. As a result of that research, I have come to a number of conclusions about what is happening and why.

This piece started out as a single essay about the pitcher injury and Tommy John surgery epidemic. Over the past few years, I have expanded it into a webbook entitled The Epidemic: The Pitcher Injury and Tommy John Surgery Epidemic Explained.
